No matter how much data you have, you must have reliable backups or the day will come when something valuable you need will be gone. Anyone who has worked with computers for very long has lost data at some time, and as the old saying goes, those who don’t learn from the past are destined to repeat it.
If you don’t have your files and computer backed up, ask yourself why not. Almost every computer comes with the capability to establish a restore point. This can take place every night while you sleep, and in case something dreadful occurs, such as a virus, you can restore to where you were before the snafu.
That works when you don’t have a hardware failure or a virus that wipes out everything. Having a backup plan for the severe conditions isn’t a bad idea either. Another old saying to consider; don’t put all your eggs (or data) in one basket.
You can never put confidence in a “one backup” system. There are many backup services on the web, many of which don’t cost you anything and others that are very affordable. The data is stored on computers on a network and password protected for your use.
A small investment is required for a hardware backup in your office. These are simply hard drives that you plug in by way of a USB and copy files over to, either manually or through a program that runs as you schedule.
You can never have too many backups of your important information, and it is very critical that you backup often. When you need data recovery, you’ll be glad you did.
